US judge temporarily blocks new Biden student debt relief planSept 5 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Thursday temporarily blocked President Joe Biden's administration from implementing its latest student debt forgiveness plan, just days after seven Republican-led states filed a lawsuit seeking to halt it.
U.S. District Judge J. Randal Hall in Augusta, Georgia, said the states had established a likelihood of proving the Education Department lacked authority to cancel student loans under the plan, which the states alleged it was on the verge of doing.
Hall issued a temporary restraining order, opens new tab after Republican state attorneys general filed a lawsuit on Tuesday over a proposed Education Department rule in April that would benefit an estimated 27.6 million borrowers with federal student loans.
The state attorneys general said they had obtained documents showing the department had instructed federal loan servicers to begin canceling hundreds of billions of dollars of loans as soon as this week, before the rule was finalized.
At least $73 billion in loans could be canceled overnight, their lawsuit said, and billions in further debt relief could follow. The states argue the Education Department has no authority to carry out such debt forgiveness.
Hall, an appointee of Republican former President George W. Bush, said he decided to "hastily" issue the order pausing the policy pending a Sept. 18 hearing in order to preserve the status quo.
"Plaintiffs show a substantial likelihood of success on the merits given the rule's lack of statutory authority," he wrote.
The Education Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.www.reuters.com/legal/us-judge-blocks-latest-biden-student-debt-relief-plan-2024-09-05/

How sad is it that Judges have to keep stopping biden on this? The judges will have to do the same thing to Harris so I do hope they are ready. Biden made a campaign promise that is ILLEGAL but he will continue to attempt to fuck over the taxpayer to appease a few. What blows my mind is the so-called adults - their words, not mine -- who want Biden to forgive their student loans could have had a good portion paid off, if they had acted like the adults they pretend to be and once the payments were halted, put the money aside or kept paying on the loans and saved themselves all this aggravation. Better yet, they could have majored in something that would have paid them a good/great salary instead of being a barista or McDonald's clerk.

They think it's FREE FREE FREE, they don't realize the money has to come somewhere. Why should they have to pay their own debt, that they chose to take on. Lib thinking huh?

How sad is it that Judges have to keep stopping biden on this? That was my first thought. I wonder if the Biden administration is the most sued administration in history. They are probably the most authoritarian (so much for the Trump-as-Hitler nonsense).

So many borrowers that received government grants and loans did not have the mental acumen or self-discipline to even take college level classes.

Too bad no one explained to them that NOTHING in life is free and the sooner they get that through their thick heads, the better off they will be. Someone needs to sit them down and explain a few things to them. 1.) Adulting is hard 2.) Responsible adulting is even worse but makes you a better person in the end. Responsible adulting includes paying the bills that a person signs up for. If your name and signature is on that loan document, YOU, and only you, are responsible for paying it.

They are probably the most authoritarian (so much for the Trump-as-Hitler nonsense). Progressives have no respect for the separation of powers as outlined in the Constitution. Since they all know how virtuous they are and how degenerate anyone that opposes them must be, it only makes sense to them that they should be allowed to rule by fiat. After all, it's for our own good... C.S. Lewis warned us all about these folks. “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

I had a neighbor who went to college or trade school for about 15 years. He never had a job in all that time. When they cut off his loans he went on welfare.

Have to do some research on that - should be interesting, considering all of the mandates that got shot down not to mention the out and out illegal stuff Edit: God, the media has such a hardon for Trump, it's impossible to find anything out.
