Kyle Gass, Jack Black's Tenacious D bandmate, says 'don't miss Trump next time' after assassination attemptKyle Gass, who performs alongside Jack Black in the rock duo Tenacious D, is facing backlash for joking about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
In a video from a recent Tenacious D show that circulated on social media, Black was seen singing happy birthday to Gass on stage. After Black told his bandmate to make a wish, Gass said, "Don't miss Trump next time," referencing the fact that 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks shot at the 45th president during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
The comment drew applause from the crowd as Black said, "Thank you."
USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Gass and Black.

In a statement provided to USA TODAY, the "School of Rock" actor, 54, said he was "blindsided" by bandmate Kyle Gass saying "don't miss Trump next time" on stage during their Tenacious D show on Sunday.
Black also said he is ending the Tenacious D tour and pausing plans to continue working with Gass.
"I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form," Black said. "After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding."
Tenacious D was set to continue performing this month with tour stops in Australia and New Zealand. The band had also announced a series of "Rock D Vote" shows in the fall to benefit the nonpartisan organization Rock the Vote ahead of the presidential election.
During a Tenacious D show Sunday in Sydney, Black presented a cake to Gass for his birthday and told him to make a wish. How could he be blindsided when it was said TO HIS FACE? *SNIP* In a video from a recent Tenacious D show that circulated on social media, Black was seen singing happy birthday to Gass on stage. Sucks. I read about it and maybe I’m biased, but I do think it was just a very poor attempt at a joke.
They did the right thing to come out and condemn it, apologize, and show remorse, but these are acts that do things to draw a reaction. Comedians make dead baby jokes, racially insensitive jokes, sexist jokes, and political jokes all the time. Honestly, it’s why I feel it’s dumb to ever prop up a comedian to be anything more than a jester.
Unfortunately, pop-culture started to treat jesters like they were philosophers and are confused when they do something incredibly stupid at the wrong time. They stuck them on late night shows and instead of doing anything other than introduce better, more handsome, and talented people, they adopted lecterns and became advertising shills for the networks’ 24 hour political channel.
Somehow, Comedy Central’s Daily Show became a trusted source for news because they made people laugh? For reasons beyond me, they took a host of ‘The Man Show,’ best known for having hot women in bikinis on trampolines and made him a feminist? I shiver at the thought that society has in store for us with the Paul Brothers in the future…
1955 Doc Brown said it best, “Ronald Reagan, the Actor? Of course! With the dependence on TV, they would need someone who looks good on it!

However, the Internet was full of leftist sharing their outrage saying the same thing -- and they weren't joking. It's amazing at how close we were to another JFK/RFK assassination.

However, the Internet was full of leftist sharing their outrage saying the same thing -- and they weren't joking. It's amazing at how close we were to another JFK/RFK assassination. Oh, I totally agree with your comment. I’m not saying they don’t deserve scorn, nor am I saying venues or agents are wrong to dump clients/acts that openly spout this. I’m just saying these guys are court jesters and I don’t actually believe the intent behind the comment. I could be 💯 wrong. So, that’s why I say I’m biased. However, I do think there’s a lot of people out there who are annoyed the shooter missed for various reasons. Some are annoyed he missed because the obvious momentum this will give Trump all the way to the boxes. There’s a portion who would have preferred it not happen at all. Then there’s another portion who likely wish if it happened that it would have been successful to prevent that tidal wave of support likely to manifest in the polls and on the ballots. There’s another portion who legitimately hate the person and view him no different than Putin or Kim Jung Un. Now, I’m 💯 down for someone assassinating that fat fuck in North Korea or Poots in Russia. I would never want that for any of our politicians, because not only the cultural shockwaves but it’s not how our system works. Russia & North Korea, they push people out windows, down aircrafts, poison political oppositions all the time. It’s a large part of the reason those places suck ass. Here, if we don’t like our politicians, we simply vote them out. If they’re really bad, we kick them out. When that little fucktard tried to assassinate Trump, he wasn’t just trying to commit murder, he was trying to take away the people’s right to choose. Sadly, in more recent times, it feels like we’re starting to operate more like China, where we try to imprison our political leaders on any charge possible. Fortunately, we aren’t China and that passageway is excruciatingly difficult unless it something clear and damning. I hope this failed attempt sees a course correction away from that. So, to bring it back around, I don’t believe Kyle Gass really wants to see Trump assassinated. However, I believe even less that Nancy Pelosi is grateful he’s alive. Btw, that Linda Peterson is a dumb cunt. I’m sure she’s a real hit on Facebook.
