We have two one year old cats. one of them actually knows when I can pick up the laser pointer without using it what’s going to happen, glancing around the room looking for the red dot. she doesn’t see me pick it up and I’m careful not to make noise with it in my hand. how does that happen ?

I agree with Nano. Cat's have great hearing. My cats would come running from a different room if they heard me pulling their food cans out, while not coming if it was a can of soup or vegetables. They also learned to show up when the can opener runs. She's likely associated the sound of you picking it up (or the AAA battery moving inside the laser pointer) with the laser dot moving.

I can already have it my hand when she comes into the room and she’ll stop and start looking for the red dot. The other cat seems totally oblivious.
It’s witchcraft I tell ya.
