The pre-season AP and Coaches polls are out. While this is largely irrelevant (Alabama and Georgia were favorites in 2022 and 2023, respectively), the SEC and Big Ten are still dominating the early voting. Unlike last year when Mizzou was picked to finish near the bottom of the SEC, Mizzou is at least getting some respect to start the year (ranking 11 in both the Coaches and AP voting). My big question is -- why is Utah rated so high?

pre season rankings are for gamblers and alumni fans.
I've long wished they stopped pre season and even early season rankings; with the playoff rankings starting in Oct, thats a logical time to actually start ranking teams.
No surprise UGA is #1, as they should be. Undefeated in regular season football for 3 years will get you that credibility.
Now jumping ahead, 12 teams is at least 4 teams too many for a college playoff.
ND will get in and get obliterated (again)
SEC and Big 16 will put at least 3, probably 4 in. ACC and Big 12 champs get in and the non power 5 lacky.

While you consider it too many, what it may do is make college players actually interested in playing the bowl games. After all, look at Florida State last year, when 23 players decided not to play. Sadly, there's still some rigging for the "also-ran" conferences that may keep an SEC team out of the playoffs. I agree on Notre Dame being overrated. I wish they had played their old coach and LSU last year, but the money changers controlling football wouldn't allow the matchup. BTW -- is Notre Dame considered in the "non-power 5" pool, or are they linked to the ACC even though they Independent (recall their contract to play five ACC teams/year). Any idea why Utah is getting smoke blown up their skirt?

They may not be #4 for long…
