How the heck do they measure this? At some point in our schooling, probably multiple points, we take a standardized IQ test in public schools. Private schools too, I assume. So, millions of IQ tests should be a matter of somewhat public record. Right?

Massachusetts is where Will Hunting is from, so makes sense that it’s 104.3 .

How the heck do they measure this? The data from scoring for Weschler is done through their own software and therefore available to them. They may also combine the data gathered through their software with studies of representative samples of the general population of each state. This could only be gathered by clinical populations, though, because the Wechsler IQ test, as well as the other most popular IQ tests, can only be given by clinical psychologists. Which means that school psychologists cannot give them. Tests that are commonly given in schools are not actual intelligence tests--they are a completely different category known as "achievement tests" which are made for assessing academic performance in those settings. Overall IQ score is also pretty meaningless and uninterpretable because it's a very watered-down statistic. What's much more meaningful is verbal and nonverbal IQ, perceptual reasoning, working memory, process speed, spatial reasoning, and other variables, all of which are subscores that go into the total IQ score.
