The US dollar has been the world “reserve currency” since 1944. Until recently, all oil was purchased in US dollars. This made the dollar in huge demand, all over the world. The most basic rule is economics is supply and demand, as you know. With most all international transactions being in US dollars, this allowed the Fed to run their printing presses with little impact on US inflation. But, the BRICS economic consortium, who are directly opposing the Dollar, have firm plans for their own reserve currency to compete with the dollar. With the two largest nations, and the two largest oil producers on board, this is not an idle threat. You don't seem to understand the significance of the US Dollar not being the world's "reserve currency." Not only are commodities priced in dollars for sale around the world, but global transactions went through the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) Banking System. Because of the SWIFT system, the US and EU could put financial sanctions on rogue states like N. Korea or Iran, restricting their economic growth and ability to purchase goods on the open market. It was a tremendous diplomatic tool to pressure a nation without having to threaten military force. The US Dollar Reserve status has also allowed our politicians to run massive deficits with inflation, while too high, not being Venezuelan style hyper-inflation. The other concern should be obvious: Its being driven by China, not the USA. Their goal is to replace the USA as the world's leading ( only?) superpower. |
