What do you think of this philosophical view of author G. Michael Hopf of the great cycle of mankind? It seems like a brilliant observation to me. I think it has also been said a hundred different ways throughout history.
”Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.”

I've seen this saying several times and I think it's a very accurate description. I think one great example of this found in looking at the last 100 years in the U.S. The kids who grew up during the depression grew up in financially tough times, they then fought tyranny and attacks in WW2 and came home to build a strong and prosperous economy.
Their kids inherited this and continued to build upon this and make life comfy for the next generation or two. This comfort of good times has now produced people who have become spoiled by the prosperity and we are slowly beginning to see the the potential for hard times coming again.

As a generalization, I believe the statement to be true. However, per families, I don't. I overcame extreme poverty. My child has been raised to understand that and I have taken my child to where I grew up. I showed her around including a spot where I was attacked and stabbed. She started crying when she saw that place. In turn, she appreciates what she has and is the toughest kid I have coached in my 38 years of coaching. She has been raised in a nice home. We have money. She was given a new car when she got her liscense. Still, she took care of everything, got exceptional grades, and made sure to be the kid we always wanted. If you want to talk work ethic, I would put her up against anyone. BTW, one of the quotes my wife and I used when raising my child was, "Show me your friends and I will show you your future."

I agree with you. Families instill morals and work ethic in their children, which is why maintaining the nuclear family is so important. Whether rich or poor, your story shows that people can succeed, escape poverty, and be successful. One can also look at children of the ultra-rich. Trump's children all seem to be successful and without the drug/alcohol problems that many of their rich peers have (or how Gussie Busch's son Billy bit the ear of a guy in a bar fight).

Don't forget Tucker Carlson's corollary 😎: "Democrats are the party of weak men and angry women." -- Tucker Carlson

I agree that the statement is true as a generality, but obviously it isn't an absolute that applies to everyone or every family, and congrats on a job well done with your daughter! Interestingly, what you described with your family story aligns with the quote that is the focus of this thread. Your upbringing aligns with the "Hard times create strong men", and it seems that you and your family are now in the "Strong men create good times" area. Now, as I said before, the statement is true in general terms, so that doesn't mean that your daughters children /grandchildren /great grand children will be weak or create hard times. I do not mean to imply that at all, so please know that. Another area I think that applies to this quote is found in the success and failures of small businesses. I've read where the average life of a small business that starts strong but ends up failing is three generations. The person who starts the business does the toil and labor to make it successful, the children then take it over and run it successfully, but when their children take it over, that is when it fails.
