He would travel by train across the country performing juggling acts in all the big cities.
Around 1900 he came to St. Louis to perform at one of the theaters and was so tuckered out from the trip that he dozed off on a stool back stage.
A stage hand needed the stool and pushed him off. Fields became angry and cursed the stage hand. The stage hand then smashed the stool over Field's head, knocking him out.
When Fields came to, he noticed an old man with a droopy mustache and cold gray eyes peering at him. He later found out the old man was Frank James, Jesse's brother, who was working at the theater as a doorman.
