When I hear certain lyrics in songs, I think about how clever or observant those lyrics are. I want to start a thread on favorite lyrics. I will try to add a set of lyrics every few days that I find interesting/clever/insightful, ...
I'll start with one of my favorite lyrics.
"Building the Perfect Beast" album. Song - Boys of Summer Artist - Don Henley
Lyrics - "I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac ..." -- I have come to understand that these lyrics represents a generation selling out on their values.
Out on the road today, I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back"
I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-

To get this thread off and running, I'll post another one of my favorite lyrics:
"Bat out of Hell" album. Song - Two out of Three Ain't Bad Artist - Meatloaf
Lyrics -- I love the imagery of these lyrics.
I poured it on and I poured it out I tried to show you just how much I care I'm tired of words and I'm too hoarse to shout But you've been cold to me so long I'm crying icicles instead of tears And all I can do is keep on tellin' you

Last effort today to kick off this thread:
"Living Years" album.
Song - In the Living Years Artist - Mike and the Mechanics
Lyrics -- I remember that this song was written by two song writers who's fathers had just passed away. It is a classic song, imo, because I think for a lot of guys, there is a point in the father/son relationship that gets tested. Mine came when I had a college scholarship (academics) and I was told my my dad that I had to move out and that mom and dad couldn't afford for me to go to college even with the college scholarship. Within a week, I had a job as a welder. I had just turned 18. Looking back, that was a great blessing and I learned how to get after it. I continued on to college working the midnight shift and 10 years later I graduated. I am so thankful for my parents. My dad was my hero. This entire song is full of great lyrics. Dad and I came to this point in the lyrics and thankfully, I came to understand the bigger picture.
… So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts
… So don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be okay

For taking in the rain when I'm feeling so dry For giving me the answers when I'm asking you why And my oh my, for that I thank you For taking in the sun when I'm feeling so cold For giving me a child when my body is old And don't you know for that I need you For coming to my room when you know I'm alone For finding me a highway, for driving me home And you gotta know for that I serve you For pulling me away when I'm starting to fall For revving me up when I'm starting to stall And all in all for that I want you For taking and for giving and for playing the game For praying for my future in the days that remain Oh Lord, for that I hold you Oh, but most of all For crying out loud for that I love you Woah, but most of all For crying out loud for that I love you Woh, but most of all For crying out loud for that I love you When you're crying out loud You know I love you Source: Musixmatch

There's a shadow just behind me Shrouding every step I take Making every promise empty Pointing every finger at me Waiting like a stalking butler
I am just a worthless liar I am just an imbecile I will only complicate you Trust in me and fall as well I will find a center in you I will chew it up and leave I will work to elevate you Just enough to bring you down

One of my favorites are the lyrics to Pink Floyd's Time, absolutely brilliant.
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way. Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain. You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today. And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time. Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone, the song is over, Thought I'd something more to say.

One of my favorites and one that I would have posted. Dang, how can anyone get more descriptive of a waste of the opportunities of life?

Don’t forget the lyrical genius of this generation… Photograph Nickelback Look at this photograph Every time I do, it makes me laugh How did our eyes get so red? And what the hell is on Joey's head? And this is where I grew up I think the present owner fixed it up I never knew we ever went without The second floor is hard for sneaking out And this is where I went to school Most of the time had better things to do Criminal record says I broke in twice I must've done it half a dozen times I wonder if it's too late Should I go back and try to graduate? Life's better now than it was back then If I was them, I wouldn't let me in

The entire song has great lyrics but it's the last verse that sticks... from Positively 4th Street
I wish that for just one time You could stand inside my shoes And just for that one moment I could be you Yes, I wish that for just one time You could stand inside my shoes You’d know what a drag it is To see you

This song hit me at a moment in my life that I really related to. I find myself thrown back into the vortex when it plays, often causing me to repeat the song several times in a row.

"That's the way Love Goes" album.
Song - That's the way Love Goes Artist - Merle Haggard
Lyrics -- On Mother's Day, this song best describes my marriage in the early years. I messed up a lot and was in a lot of fights. I was always right even when I was wrong. As I often say, "I was so right that I was wrong." My wife is my biggest fan and I'd recommend that you don't say anything bad about me around her. I outkicked my coverage in getting her to marry me and then, we had a child. I have been so blessed.
I've been throwing horseshoes
Over my left shoulder
I've spent most all my life
Searching for that four-leaf clover
Yet you ran with me
Chasing my rainbows
Honey, I love you too
That's the way love goes
That's the way love goes, babe
That's the music God made
For all the world to sing
It's never old, it grows
Losing makes me sorry
You say, "Honey, now don't worry
Don't you know I love you too?"
And that's the way love goes
That's the way love goes, babe
That's the music God made
For all the world to sing
It's never old, it grows
Losing makes me sorry
And you say, "Honey, don't worry
Don't you know I love you too?"
And that's the way love goes

Plenty of cheating/break up songs have been written but few rock songs convey bitter sentiments lyrically as well as this one. Sung with angst, a catchy chorus and fiery guitar licks it's somewhat obscure which is a shame because it's a fantasitic song. Sand Rubies - Goodbye (1993) On the eve of independence day I've a few things I'd like to say For all the times you put me down For all the times you weren't around You'll look to me And I won't be found For all the times you set me up For all our hope that you gave up For nearly crushing all of my dreams And all the real life in between You see it's you Better Realize I'm only here to say goodbye Realize I'm only here to say goodbye This is goodbye For using me and all I own For your neck dressed in another man's cologne For every lie and every cheat I'm sure my catalogue's incomplete You little creep You better realize I'm only here to say goodbye Realize I'm only here to say goodbye Realize I'm only here to say goodbye Realize, realize, realize This is goodbye For driving my car into a lake For never baking my birthday cake For all the men who took off your clothes For all my money you put up your nose For every excuse you ever made For all your bills I always paid For every moment of every day This is the last one I'm glad to say In every way You better Realize I'm only here to say goodbye Realize I'm only here to say goodbye Going to Realize I'm only here to say goodbye Realize, realize, realize This is goodbye Sand Rubies - Goodbye Crappy audio quality but it's YT.
