"Leftoverture" album. Song - Carry On Wayward Song Artist - Kansas
Lyrics -- No song list of favorite lyrics would be complete without this song:
"Carry On Wayward Son"
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
Ah
Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man
Well, it surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more no!
Carry on
You will always remember
Carry on
Nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry
Don't you cry no more
No more!

Kansas had a fantastic 3 album run with Masque, Leftoverture and Point of No Return, they were on fire. One of my favorite Kansas songs is Two Cents Worth from Masque, great lyrics, especially the first verse.
Well, I've been drinkin' again And I know it's a sin But I just can't refuse an old friend Cause life is gettin' me down And I've been two times around And there ain't nothing but pain around the bend I'm not made for the time I'm born in the wrong century There's too much craziness here In twenty-five years I have used all the tears in my eyes

"Born In The U.S.A." album. Song - Born In The U.S.A. Artist - Bruce Springsteen
Lyrics -- This is a powerful song about how Vietnam Veterans were welcomed back to this country after their service to our country. For the average listener, they may not understand some of the lyrics. When Springsteen writes, "I had a brother at Khe Sanh fighting off the Viet Cong they're still there, he's all gone ...," most Americans today don't realize that we had 6,000 total Marines facing off against 42,000 Vietnamese Regulars. They fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War here and fought for 77 days. At one point, it was asked if nuclear weapons would be required to defend Khe Sanh. If you have never seen Dear America, Letters Home From Vietnam, I highly recommend it. I remember my cousin coming home from Vietnam. He was messed up and there weren't jobs for these returning soldiers.
"Born In The U.S.A."
Born down in a dead man's town The first kick I took was when I hit the ground You end up like a dog that's been beat too much 'Til you spend half your life just coverin' up
Born in the U.S.A I was born in the U.S.A I was born in the U.S.A Born in the U.S.A
Got in a little hometown jam So they put a rifle in my hand Sent me off to a foreign land To go and kill the yellow man
Born in the U.S.A I was born in the U.S.A I was born in the U.S.A I was born in the U.S.A
Come back home to the refinery Hiring man says, "Son if it was up to me" Went down to see my V.A. man He said, "Son, don't you understand"
I had a brother at Khe Sanh Fighting off the Viet Cong They're still there, he's all gone He had a woman he loved in Saigon I got a picture of him in her arms now
Down in the shadow of the penitentiary Out by the gas fires of the refinery I'm ten years burning down the road Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go
Born in the U.S.A I was born in the U.S.A. now Born in the U.S.A I'm a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A. now Born in the U.S.A Born in the U.S.A Born in the U.S.A I'm a cool rockin' Daddy in the U.S.A. now

Brilliant Mistake by Elvis Costello
He thought he was the King of America Where they pour Coca Cola just like vintage wine Now I try hard not to become hysterical But I'm not sure if I am laughing or crying I wish that I could push a button And talk in the past and not the present tense And watch this hurtin' feeling disappear Like it was common sense It was a fine idea at the time Now it's a brilliant mistake
She said that she was working for the ABC News It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use Her perfume was unspeakable It lingered in the air Like her artificial laughter Her mementos of affairs "Oh" I said "I see you know him" "Isn't that very fortunate for you" And she showed me his calling card He came third or fourth and there were more than one or two He was a fine idea at the time Now he's a brilliant mistaake
He thought he was the King of America But it was just a boulevard of broken dreams A trick they do with mirrors and with chemicals The words of love in whispers And the acts of love in screams I wish that I could push a button And talk in the past and not the present tense And watch this lovin' feeling disappear Like it was common sense I was a fine idea at the time Now I'm a brilliant mistake I was a fine idea at the time Now I'm a brilliant mistake

A few more that shouldn't need any attribution......
Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie, Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
I've been drivin' all night my hands wet on the wheel, There's a voice in my head that drives my heel
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss
Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin’ for the trains, feelin’ nearly faded as my jeans

Journey Through the Past -- album. Song - "Southern Man" Artist - Neil Young
Lyrics - Neil Young has some powerful songs. We could fill this thread up with lyrics from his songs. Here is one powerful song:
"Southern Man" (from "Journey Through The Past" soundtrack)
Southern man, better keep your head. Don't forget what your good book said. Southern change gonna come at last. Now your crosses are burning fast.
Southern man.
I saw cotton and I saw black. Tall white mansions and little shacks. Southern man, when will you pay them back?
I heard screamin' and bullwhips cracking. How long? How long?
Southern man, better keep your head. Don't forget what your good book said. Southern change gonna come at last. Now your crosses are burning fast.
Southern man.
Lily Belle, your hair is golden brown. I've seen your black man comin' round. Swear by God, I'm gonna cut him down!
I heard screamin' and bullwhips cracking. How long? How long?

A lot of people find Southern Man preachy and stereotypical of southerners. Same with another Neil song from Harvest - Alabama. That said I like Southern Man and my go to version is from 4 Way Street. Alabama is a clunker. Those two songs famously inspired another band to write the song that launched their career.

Sweet Home Alabama. Well, I heard Mr. Young sing about her Well, I heard ol' Neil put her down Well, I hope Neil Young will remember A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow

A couple of single lines that also should need no introduction...
"There's someone in my head, but it's not me" "The children of the sun...begin to awake" "I saw a werewolf drinkin' a pina colada at Trader Vic's..and his hair was perfect"
And a song that expresses a sad but all-to-understandable story...
Eleanor Rigby
"Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name Nobody came. Father Mackenzie Wiping the dirt from his hands as He walks from the grave. No one was saved"

This song, once I paid attention to the lyrics, struck me as thought provoking. What comes after death, when all that was is gone? What if you're agnostic? Does it matter? Great lyrics by a master.
Where To Now St. Peter? Elton John/Tumbleweed Connection | Lyrics - Bernie Taupin
I took myself a blue canoe And I floated like a leaf Dazzling, dancing Half enchanted In my Merlin sleep
Crazy was the feeling Restless were my eyes Insane they took the paddles My arms they paralysed
So where to now St. Peter? If it's true I'm in your hands I may not be a Christian But I've done all one man can
I understand I'm on the road Where all that was is gone So where to now St. Peter? Show me which road I'm on Which road I'm on
It took a sweet young foreign gun This lazy life is short Something for nothing always ending With a bad report
Dirty was the daybreak Sudden was the change In such a silent place as this Beyond the rifle range
So where to now St. Peter? If it's true I'm in your hands I may not be a Christian But I've done all one man can
I understand I'm on the road Where all that was is gone So where to now St. Peter Show me which road I'm on Which road I'm on
I took myself a blue canoe
