Meet the Americans STILL isolating 4 years into Covid pandemic... including NJ woman who's been in lockdown for 1,620 daysFor many Americans, the Covid pandemic and draconian lockdowns it ushered in feel like a thing of the past. Biden declared the pandemic over last May, and it's not been viewed as a major voter issue since. But for some Americans, the masking and social distancing never ended. Sara Anne Willette, from New Jersey, has spent more than 1,600 days in isolation, rarely leaving home and planning to further isolate to the countryside, Because of her weakened immune system, she suffers severe anxiety just walking down the street or going grocery shopping for fear of getting sick. She already took precautions like wearing a mask in public before the pandemic to avoid catching germs, but But since March 2020.. went to extreme lengths Now, her and her husband are looking to move to the countryside to further isolate. Charis Hill, a California resident with 'high-level medical needs,' only breaks their quarantine once a month to meet with a masked, socially distanced group of friends. Hill, who uses they/them pronouns, believes that mask bans being proposed in the state 'make it unsafe for us to exist.' www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-13796599/Americans-social-isolating-covid-pandemic-stay-home.html

I don't get it. People who have weakened immune systems, who according to the article were already wearing a mask in public and were germophobic before COVID, continue to wear masks and continue to be germophobic.
Good for them for taking care of themselves. It doesn't seem like they are asking you and I to stay home, get vaccinated, or even wear a mask when we are out in public. Their situation, however, dictates more caution. Caution they are taking upon themselves and were taking prior to COVID.
There are a lot of people out in the world. I can always find several who believe in the most insane shit. But what would that prove beyond the fact that there are a few people out of hundreds of millions who believe in the most insane shit?

As far as the one in California, IIRC, the mask ban being discussed/proposed is for those who protest or break the law so unless "them and theri buds" are protesting or breaking the law, it wouldn't apply to them!

Most of us could care less if these people want to isolate in perpetuity. That's not the issue. The problem is in statements like this: ' We need a new normal, and a new normal that is equitable for everyone, and that not only prioritizes high risk people, but that also reduces infection overall.' What do you think she means other than forcing everyone to wear a mask 24/7 in public? Prior to the pandemic, we would recognizes these people for the hypochondriacs they are and treat them with the scorn they deserve. Now they get whole articles written about their 'concerns.'

Any time you see a person with a mask on, you know it’s a liberal. They are as nutty as they come.

I actually do agree with you on that point. Her health problems are hers to mitigate. We cannot as a society cater to the needs of the slim minority of people. but while you think her viewpoint is extreme, you probably wouldn't think it was extreme if it was you or your child. Everyone has their causes based on their own situations. So I don't understand why you believe they should be treated 'with the scorn they deserve'. We simply cannot grind society to a halt because of them, but treating them with scorn seems a little harsh.

As I am fond of saying, we live in times where idiots self-identify. One of the ways is a healthy person wearing a mask in public.

When your emotions overcome your reason to the point where you'd be willing to limit the freedom of everyone because you don't think it's equitable otherwise, scorn is the proper response.

A healthy person who feels the need to wear a mask in public; I think we can agree that person's problem is a mental one. But how could you know that person wearing the mask in public is 'healthy'? When I see a person wearing a mask, I assume that they aren't healthy and that is why they wear one. And then I go about my day and don't think about it ever again (until I read a post like yours).

Do you heap scorn at mothers who have lost children to drunk driving? I don't, even though I don't agree with the laws that they want to enact.

Because before Covid you rarely saw people wearing masks in public. OK. And maybe Covid brought a heightened sense to those 'unhealthy' people who wouldn't have worn a mask before Covid but now choose to wear one after Covid. Who cares? Why should I care that someone chooses to wear a mask in public?

Why should I care that someone chooses to wear a mask in public? You don't have to care. The OP is just stating that some people have developed a mental illness concerning contracting an illness that was overhyped.
